WASH Sector

Women and Children Health organization (WCHO) recognizes that South Sudan is still having one of the worst sanitation indicators in the world. WCHO committed to drilling and constructing water points, WASH promotion and to build the local capacity of water user committee in water governance.

WCHO will adopt Community led total sanitation (CLTS), PHAST and CHAST methodologies to minimize the risk of water contamination and water bone related disease; and WCHO reward communities that declare no open defecation, free boreholes, including educating people about good hygiene habits in the community so as to reduce the health risks of water-related diseases, that often result to infant mortality.

  • Hygiene and sanitation promotion: awareness creation at the community level
  • Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS)
  • Construction and rehabilitation of latrines in public places/institutions
  • Provision of sanitation and hygiene materials/items (washing buckets, soaps) and others.
  • Rehabilitating and constructing safe water points: Following an in-depth assessment of safe water needs for each community, WCHO will work with the community to determine the location of the safe water points for construction or rehabilitation.
  • Training community volunteers to manage safe water points and maintain their cleanliness and functionality. WCHO will also establish community water user committees (WUCs) to maintain and manage safe water points.
  • Raising awareness and education: WCHO will increase the awareness in the community and will provide education in water conservation and cleanliness maintenance. It will also emphasize the importance of using sanitary facilities instead of open defecation.
